What the Teradek Bolt 7 1500 Brings to Market
The Teradek Bolt 7 represents a significant step forward from the Bolt 6 architecture. Rather than being an incremental update, the Bolt 7 integrates a dedicated 900 MHz channel that runs alongside the main video link, carrying camera control signals, colour management data, and telemetry independently of the video transmission path.
On the video side, the Bolt 7 supports 4K60 10-bit 4:2:2 HDR over 12G-SDI, a format the Bolt 6 range does not match. The transmitter also includes a USB-C DP-Alt Mode input for single-cable connection from compatible cameras, including the Blackmagic PYXIS.
The Bolt 7 receiver carries two 12G-SDI outputs, HDMI, and the USB-C DP-Alt connection, a comprehensive output configuration designed to serve the full range of 4K monitoring setups.
What the VITA Series Brings
The VITA PRO System and Vita Lite System approach wireless monitoring from a different angle. Both are HD-only and do not transmit 4K. What they offer instead is a well-designed HD monitoring system with a longer rated range than the Bolt 7, a modular ecosystem structure, and access through hire for UK productions.
The VITA PRO System is rated to up to 600 m line-of-sight, with sub-1 ms system latency, enhanced multi-antenna reception on the receiver, and two HD-SDI outputs plus HDMI from the RX unit. The Vita Lite System covers a more compact use case: up to 200 m range in a 260 g transmitter and 240 g receiver.

The 4K Question: When Does It Actually Matter?
The Teradek Bolt 7’s 4K60 12G-SDI capability is a meaningful specification for specific production workflows. For it to provide a genuine benefit, the camera must output 4K over SDI or USB-C to the transmitter, and the monitoring display must be capable of accepting and benefiting from a 4K input.
Many professional productions that acquire in 4K still monitor in HD, because focus assessment, exposure reading, and framing decisions do not require a 4K display on the monitoring side. In those workflows, the Bolt 7’s 4K capability is unused.
Where 4K monitoring is genuinely in use, such as high-end commercial productions with premium 4K monitor setups, or workflows where the director insists on monitoring at acquisition resolution, the Bolt 7 is the only system in this comparison that can deliver it wirelessly. The VITA range does not compete on this point.
The 900 MHz Data Channel: What It Does and What It Requires
The integrated 900 MHz data channel in the Bolt 7 is one of its most distinctive features. On a conventional OB or drama production with a remotely shaded camera, the Sony camera control link and the wireless video monitoring link are traditionally two separate wireless systems, each requiring its own frequency allocation, antenna placement, and management. The Bolt 7 aims to consolidate the data side into the same physical unit as the video link.
The important constraint is that the 900 MHz data functions require Bolt 7 units at both ends of the link. Pairing a Bolt 7 TX with a Bolt 6 RX gives wireless video with backward compatibility, but the 900 MHz channel and its camera control and colour management capabilities are inactive. The full Bolt 7 feature set is only available in a Bolt 7-to-Bolt 7 configuration.
How the WaveHire FLEX Series Compares on Camera Control
The VITA series is designed exclusively for wireless video monitoring and does not include integrated camera control. For productions that need both wireless video and wireless camera control, WaveHire offers the FLEX series as a separate, complementary solution.
The FLEX range, covering the FLEX IP, FLEX S700, and FLEX Fusion, is designed for live broadcast applications and carries HD-SDI video alongside additional data: IP data, Sony 700 protocol camera control, or both simultaneously depending on the model. The FLEX series operates across 868 MHz, 900 MHz, and 2.4 GHz data options depending on the unit and configuration.
This allows a production to combine a VITA PRO System for wireless video monitoring with a FLEX unit for wireless camera control, choosing the appropriate data frequency for the location and RF environment. The two systems are separate devices rather than an integrated single unit, which gives the RF coordinator the flexibility to manage each link independently. It is a different approach to the Bolt 7’s consolidated design, and one that may suit productions where the monitoring and camera control links need to be managed separately.
You can view the full FLEX range on the equipment pages.
Range: VITA PRO Leads, Bolt 7 Covers Most Practical Distances
At 457 m rated range, the Bolt 7 1500 comfortably covers the majority of professional production distances. Most drama set monitoring positions are within 100 m of the camera. Most studio and controlled-environment setups are within 200 m. The 457 m figure is generous for those use cases.
The VITA PRO System’s 600 m rated range becomes relevant on large outdoor productions, in sports broadcast at venues where the camera-to-truck distance is substantial, and on productions where a conservative engineer wants more margin in the link budget.
The Vita Lite System at 200 m is the appropriate specification for any location where the camera and monitoring position are reliably within that distance and the lower daily hire rate is a factor.
Bolt 7 Backward Compatibility
For productions that already operate within the Teradek ecosystem using Bolt 6, Bolt 4K, or Ace units, the Bolt 7 offers a degree of backward compatibility. A Bolt 7 TX can pair with Bolt 6 and Bolt 4K receivers for wireless video, and vice versa. The 900 MHz data channel does not carry across the compatibility boundary, but the core video link does. The Bolt 7 is not compatible with BB2 models.
The VITA ecosystem does not interact with the Teradek range. VITA components are WaveHire-specific and are designed to be mixed within the VITA product family, including the Vita Transmitter and Vita Lite Receiver. Confirm specific pairing configurations with WaveHire at the time of booking.
Hire Availability
The VITA PRO System and Vita Lite System are available to hire from WaveHire. Rates start from £125 per day for the VITA PRO System and £90 per day for the Vita Lite System, excluding VAT. For a two-week hire of the VITA PRO System, the cost would be two weekly rates at £375 each, £750 in total. Kits are technician-tested before every dispatch, and same-day collection is available from the WaveHire facility in London SW6.
The Teradek Bolt 7 1500 is available to purchase from professional broadcast dealers. WaveHire does not currently stock Teradek equipment for hire. To discuss your production dates, check the prices or contact our team.
Where Each System Has the Advantage
The Teradek Bolt 7 1500 is the appropriate choice when:
- The production monitors natively in 4K and the camera outputs 4K over 12G-SDI or USB-C
- Integrated camera control and colour management data over the wireless link is part of the workflow, and both ends are Bolt 7 units
- The production is expanding an existing Bolt 6 ecosystem and wants video-level backward compatibility
- The USB-C DP-Alt workflow suits the specific camera in use
- A 6 GHz spectrum environment is available and beneficial for the location
The VITA PRO System is the appropriate choice when:
- HD monitoring at sub-1 ms latency over up to 600 m is the requirement, without 4K
- Two HD-SDI outputs from the receiver are needed to serve two SDI monitoring positions directly
- A modular approach is needed, with individually hired Vita Transmitters or Vita Lite Receivers added to the link
- The production requires separate, independently managed wireless video and wireless camera control links, combining VITA with a FLEX unit from WaveHire
- Hiring with UK-based technician support and same-day London collection is operationally important
The Vita Lite System is the appropriate choice when:
- The camera-to-monitor distance is consistently within 200 m
- Compact transmitter size and low weight are priorities for the camera rig
- A lower-cost entry point for professional HD wireless monitoring is needed
- A second monitoring link is needed alongside a primary VITA PRO setup at a reduced daily hire rate
